I’m so happy to be finished with this book because it was honestly the bleakest story I’ve ever read. I wanted to read it after hearing that it was the inspiration for “Jojo Rabbit.” I haven’t seen it yet, but have heard it’s excellent, so I figured I’d read the book first before I got my copy of the movie.
This book is not badly written, but it is so disturbing/ uncomfortable. And I think it’s intended to be a dark comedy? But it was more absurdist than funny. Unfortunately, the main character is so unlikable, I just found the entire story to be so grim. Nothing like a manipulative, gaslighting Hitler Youth to make you really disinterested in a book.
