Described as an “enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world,” I figured I would really enjoy this book. I truly love a book about strong, resilient women and thought this sounds like a very interesting historical fantasy. Although I enjoyed the writing style, I didn’t really gel with any of the characters and didn’t ever really get into this book. More importantly, I was not prepared for a somewhat graphic rape scene and every woman in this to experience some type of sexual, physical, or psychological abuse. I expected a book about magic- but that only comes into play at the very end of the novel and I didn’t find it to be empowering at all, but rather a last resort to scary and sad situations. The justice in this novel is fleeting- only coming after chapter and chapters of abuse.
Graphic: Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Incest, Miscarriage, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Rape, Sexism, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Suicidal thoughts, Suicide, Toxic relationship, Blood, Stalking, Car accident, Abortion, and Pregnancy
