Across the Green Grass Fields
by Seanan McGuire
Ok, so it had to come at some point but this was definitely not my favourite out of this series. That definitely doesn’t mean that it wasn’t good or anything, but I just think that it was not the one for me.
I don’t know whether that was because there was such an emphasis on horses and horse-like creatures in this one and I just do not like horses at all, or whether it just felt a little rushed to me, or just something else that I didn’t vibe with, I’m not entirely sure. I just know that it didn’t feel as strong as some of the others in the series and it left me feeling a teeny tiny bit disappointed.
And while I normally really appreciate the way that McGuire brings in representation that feels natural and is not seen in a lot of mainstream books, this one felt a little forced. I totally appreciate having a main character, especially one in YA literature, being intersex but it did feel a little bit like it had been added in with no further mention of it.
But aside from that, it was an enjoyable story even if it didn’t feel as strong as some of its predecessors.
