The Trees by Conrad Richter
4.0

I have to admit, I went into this one a bit resentful as I'm currently working through all of the Pulitzer Prize winners and for some reason they granted it to the 3rd book in this trilogy, and by all accounts it's best to read these in order. Thankfully, it's a relatively short book and I actually found it quite interesting/engaging. The descriptions were lovely and reminded me a lot of that first Laura Ingalls Wilder book, which I read and loved as a kid. I ended up quite attached to the characters, particularly Sayward, enough that I'm actually looking forward to getting more of her and her family in the next books.

It had the expected racism, particularly towards Native Americans, which I did find particularly difficult to get past, especially as I'm also read a history of racism in the USA right now that goes through this specific time period.
