The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby
4.0

The first time I saw the film adaptation of this book, I wasn't crazy about it. As time went on, though, and I watched it again and again, I began to recognize it for the piece of cinematic brilliance it is. Jean-Dominique Bauby's short book doesn't quite share that same brilliance, though. It's a fine line to tread, though, as Bauby wrote this entire book by blinking his one good eye. So, I don't want to give it too hard of a time. Bauby was an editor for Elle magazine before a rare stroke left him mostly paralyzed. This memoir is interesting, with plenty of biting humor and wit. It just doesn't have the same level of artistic brilliance achieved by the film.
