I have to be honest, I've read the Caraval series a few years ago and I was in love with the world and how whimsical everything was. and I LOVED Jacks. and I actually was one of the fans who really wanted him to be with Donatella. Truly. So when the first book of this series came out and it was all about Jack's love story and redemption and his curse, I was sold . But I was just not a fan of Evangeline as the one true love & soulmate for Jacks. And the whole reveal of the curse put on "the prince of hearts" -- So lacking.
I have so many questions.
Why on earth her? I need answers. What makes her so special? She can open doors, cool? That character detail was ignored in this book. She is the rose golden haired "fox"? Cool, so were all the OTHER girls before her. This would've been so much better if she was the actual reincarnation of the fox girl that Jacks originally fell in love with. But no. She can't even turn into a fox.
Major plot holes in this book. Sure lets turn Apollo into a main villain. it's not like he didn't suffer enough trauma from being under a love spell, then under a curse to kill a girl, and then to find out that no one even liked him as a prince and only mourned his death one day? oh and the fact he got tortured by his own brother. Also, when did he even really fall in love with Eva?? It would make sense if he was mad at her.
THEN we find out that the whole reason of these curses put on Jacks is because of a little sister who was upset that her crush didn't return her feelings. Looking at you Aurora. I was actually rooting for you. You and Marisol should go be friends and make some poison apples and give them out in the cursed forest.
AND the one that annoys me the most is that Jacks "Prince of Hearts" is not only a Fate (which never was really explained how he became a fate anyways) but the archer?? Homeboy can't catch a break. He can't even get a proper character origin.
Oh and all the other plotholes that didn't get answered? Jacks and his apples, where the heck is Luc and Marisol, and the PROTECTORATE had no idea the arch was open, the whole Valory family became fixer uppers, why doesn't Lala like her dragon man, Apollo is the new Tamlin, Chaos is out there eating people but all we get is his bromance scenes, random self defense scenes, the list goes on...
Technically I rate this 3.5 out of 5 stars since I was engaged and read this all in one day.
