War Cry by Mark Powers, Jim Butcher

4.0

This was my first Dresden Files comic: I read it after having read virtually every short story and novel already published for this setting, and it made me wonder - does the comic format *add* to it, or does it work better in purely written form?
I think it depends on just how vivid your imagination is.
In my case, it was a mixed bag. I loved the image of the city-devouring Shoggoth: my own mind could not have come up with anything more epic than that. But the Red Court Vampires, while impressively drawn by the artist, did not hold the same horror for me as they did in the novels. The description of their monstrous shape moving under their skin is infinitely more gruesome in my imagination, and no comic version could ever do it justice.
The story was top-notch, and a welcome addition to the Dresden universe. I highly recommend it to fans of the setting.
