The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami
5.0
"This kind of thing's going on in libraries everywhere, you know...If all they did was lend out knowledge for free, what would the payoff be for them?"
Say you're a guy who is walking down the street and decides, like one does, that you would like to know more about how taxes were collected in the Ottoman Empire. What to do?
Well, if you're my friend, you know the answer is found in your friendly library. Only, in this case, when you are given the best books on the subject you are taken to a reading room that is in fact your prison. You have one month to memorize the books given to you. If you have mastered the tomes, you are set free. If not the librarian gets to eat your brains.
Wait. What? See, you think we are all warriors for knowledge but in reality, librarians just like tasty, squishy brains and brains are the most yummy when they are packed with knowledge.
Murakami is a delight. The packaging of this story is just as much fun as the story itself. Enjoy the library if you dare...
