A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

3.75

I enjoyed the romp. And it was much better than book 1 because the first act most forward quickly.

Enjoyed:
- sarcasm and humour
- exhibitionism in a spicy scene (ch42)
- the adventures and questing
- Lucien is smart
- hybern king trapped rhysand.  The plot needs a setback and I found R’s ‘I know best’ leadership implausible.

Disliked:
- hyperbolic narration (eg “the words the only sounds in the silent, dark city”)
- gendering
- turning tamlin into a 2D character for the first act. It was a missed opportunity to demonstrate lack of communication in their relationship
- odd to see writer use of concepts of marriage,  hell, male  and woman. Inconsistent
- repetitive narration (traitor, he has suffered on “another level”)
- pairing up of characters
- finale. Messy and contrived and melodramatic dialogue.
- comparing her and his trauma.
- tropes and plot devices were clunky more often than not.
- the volume of weapons made with ash wood
