The Star Outside My Window by Onjali Q. Raúf
4.0

This book broke my heart and made me cry especially in the last few chapters. I made the mistake of reading this at work and I had to hide my sniffles. This was a little hard for me to read because the characters feel very real and you just want give them a big hug and protect them at all cost.

This story follows two siblings, Aniyah and Noah who are in foster care due to domestic abuse from their father. It touches on the effect domestic abuse has on them and the lengths that Aniyah goes to remember their mother who died from abuse. Noah, who is still very young may not be able to remember every detail about their mother but Aniyah is always quick to remind him. Aniyah and Noah are not aware that their mother had died. On the night it happened, Aniyah heard a loud bang and believed that her mother’s heart had exploded into a star. When a rare star was found, Aniyah thought that their mother had found a way back to them and so an adventure begins.

Reading about domestic violence is never easy but reading about domestic violence in a child’s perspective is very, very tough. Often times, children don’t realise they are being abused and they do not know the term ‘domestic abuse’ which was what this story portrayed. I learned that we can never underestimate a love of a parent (be it mom or dad) and what lengths they would go in order to protect their children but I also learned that there are parents out there who would do the complete opposite and have no qualms in hurting their children. This is a beautiful read for me and I highly recommend giving this a go.
