I, Vampire, Vol. 2: Rise of the Vampires
by Joshua Hale Fialkov, Andrea Sorrentino
I can see why this book was cancelled. I mean it's neat, but there's not much really going for it except the two significant twists at the end of each book. Interestingly, this also includes two issues of Justice League Dark which tie into the rise of the vampires arc.
There's just nothing overwhelmingly good about this. Characters' motives are thin at best and most of the time purely scripted. JLD doesn't fare any better than the actual I, Vampire books. I still don't get why anyone has any level of trust for Xanadu. Maybe she's better in Demon Knights, but here she makes no sense and tends to be the source of all the problems.
I realize this book has a lot of magic, but even magic has rules and this doesn't seem to really follow any. Everything jumps all over the place and everything just seems convenient.
The art doesn't really do anything to help the situation. The JLD art is fine, but not really appealing to me. The rest of the art is beautiful. It's all moody and sweeping and artistic. However, and I said this about the first volume too, the art is too muddy. There's no distinction. You can't see different features and there's no lines to show what's actually happening.
I like seeing what happens next, and I'll finish the series out with volume 3, but it's not really that great. Don't spend your money if you can read it another way. Or just skip over it altogether.
