A solid thriller with some especially haunting and disturbing moments towards the end. That being said, I definitely enjoyed the second half of this book far more than I enjoyed the first half. I fully believe that this book is entirely too long and would have been more effective had it not been over 500 pages. The beginning was very slow and made it hard to want to continue; while I’m glad I ultimately did, I think it would’ve been better to not have such a slow and drawn out start. The atmosphere of this was very descriptive and immersive which is one of the main factors that kept me invested enough to keep going. The overall plot of a serial killer leaving such an innocent marker as a chestnut doll was brilliant and masterfully executed. This book reminded me so much of The Snowman by Jo Nesbø so I think it would be perfect for fans of that and vice versa. Overall, I think that personally, translated thrillers are always going to be hard for me to love wholeheartedly. For one thing, I definitely think some aspect of the story is lost as a result of being translated. Also, I think not being familiar with the foreign settings, systems, and customs makes it hard to get fully invested in both the characters and the full story. Regardless, The Chestnut Man is an intriguing thriller with twists and turns until the very end that I generally recommend.
