Clara by Kurt Palka

Goodreads- First Reads Winner
This book was good, due to its focus on philosophy and women's role in the 1930s-1940s. Clara was a relatable and intriguing character who wanted to have more than a husband and a family. Her interest in philosophy and her eventual doctorate lent a an interesting perspective to this book. The book did not name-drop the names associated with 1940s Germany that appear in Holocaust fiction, because it focused on philosophers such as Nietzsche and Freud. These philosophers influenced Clara because they were her teachers.
My criticism would be Clara lacked emotional reactions to the events that she experienced, specifically her children's births, her friend's deaths, and her wartime experiences.
