Kind of a Big Deal by Shannon Hale

5.0

This was such an unexpectedly amazing book!! I thought it was just going to be the story of an adolescent girl feeling awkward and stumbling through life like we all do, but Shannon Hale really pulled out the stops with this one.

Josie is a girl who fears she peaked in highschool. Living on her own and trying to make sense of the world, she feels that she accidentally left the only part of life that would be good far too soon. She starts seeking escapism through books, but quickly finds herself literally in the world of each book.

I won't spoil the rest, but this books really does such a good job of depicting the fear, yearning, hopes, and growing pains of young adult life. These human emotions are displayed so candidly and accurately.

The pacing of this book spot on. You jump right in with an interest in Josie's life and struggles, and then continue on to see what the plot is. The pacing isn't too fast or intense, but moves you along. Then, right there in the third act Hale sets the pacing roaring with serious stakes and you don't know how or if Josie can make it out. Finally, the resolution comes, slow and sweet, but not the way you had predicted.

I would recommend this book to anyone, really, even if they aren't that into YA fiction.
