The Wednesday Wars
by Gary D. Schmidt
I heard this book recommended by BookTube's Katie from Life Between Words a couple of years ago. I wasn't overly excited to pick this book up and the only reason I did pick this one up was that they other books I wanted to read weren't available or didn't come in audio format at my library.
I'd never read a Gary Schmidt book before but the first thing that struck me was the authorial voice. Holling Hoodhood's POV immediately grabbed me and the humor interlaced throughout the book kept me wanting to keep reading. I can't relate to a teenage boy but his experience as the everyman still made me feel like I could relate to him on a certain level.
Although this book took place during the height of the Vietnam war and included historical references such as nuclear bomb drills at school, I wish there were more historical references or that I could have learned a bit more about our history during this time period.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I found myself wanting more though. The middle grade books that have stayed with me the longest have had more angst and heart.
