Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really great read!! There are so many themes tackled in this book, but one that I really appreciated and I think was handled with such care was exploring internalized homophobia. At the start of the book, the characters are not even out to themselves, and I loved getting to journey with them as they waded through the messy detangling of coming into themselves. It was beautiful to read, and highly relatable.
Additionally, buckle up folks, cause this book is h0rny! lol. They said “high heat” and they meant it. There’s a lot of erections lol. The spice is described in detail which I appreciate and it also contributed to the storyline which i think is hard to do when you have a lot of smut in a book.
What really pushed this book over the edge to being a 5 star read for me was the exploration of dark, deeply emotional themes in the second half of the book. I recommend you read the triggers. Yorke did a great job exploring these heavy topics with nuance, respect, and so much care. I gasped, I cried, I yearned. Y’all should read this book.
If you’re a seasonal / vibe reader like me, this book fits so well for a summer read. For a lot of the book we are hanging out during summer training. It’s set in California too so there’s a lot of description of sweaty, hot environment. There is one significant scene that takes place during Thanksgiving too, but it’s definitely a summer / early fall vibes book.
