If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane
4.0

I really really really enjoyed this novel. I loved the pacing and truly delving into the damage that the Jamie and Laurie have gone through and seeing their development over the book. I originally thought the beginning was a bit slow as it was all Laurie going through the stages of heartbreak and figuring out what she ‘did wrong’ in her previous relationship but looking back the pacing of the book was lovely. There were many movie references that I did not understand but it if I did it would probably make the book so much better. I loved this book for more than just the romance of two people but for the development and growth that they showed despite the obstacles they have to/had overcome. At some instances I didn’t like the way the story was written like the diction with abbreviations in the dialogue and the internal dialogue had text abbreviations but I got over it. Was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I have. I also think the topics of racism and sexism were well represented and discussed in this novel.
