I really empathized with Cordelia, daughter of the titular sorceress Evangeline, who has been isolated and abused by her mother throughout her childhood. As she was forced into magical obedience, I was reminded a little of Ella from Ella Enchanted, but... Cordelia doesn't have Ella's rebellious nature. Watching her become a little more self-confident under the wing of Hester was a joy.

Hester is the aged sister of the man Evangeline has set her sights on to marry, and she's sharp as a tack. Even before Evangeline sweeps into her life, Hester feels a sense of Doom, and she distrusts Evangeline immediately. Hester would be more than happy to kick Evangeline out of her brother's house without any explanation, but she recognizes Cordelia's plight, and so she can't bring herself to do it. Instead, she recruits some of her friends for a house party in an effort to thwart Evangeline more subtly, and they're great characters. (Shout out to Tom Williard, the butler!)

Things go awry with a murder and a demon horse.

OR: A regency romance by way of T. Kingfisher goes about how you'd expect. 😄 (If you're not one to read acknowledgements, make an exception here; they're fantastic.)
