Love by Toni Morrison

5.0

One of her best. Such calculated, poetic writing expressing such raw, deep emotion that despite feeling so wild and out of control is portrayed in such perfect composition. From each sentence to paragraph to chapter to the entire story, the pacing is perfect. God damn I mean there’s no one else who reveals a story as good as her. Stories do not happen, the layers of the story peel away in bits and pieces to expose the story. She always makes the right choices. Dialogue is crisp, engaging, believable, and powerful. When she decides to introduce a narrator for a few pages in italics, it works. When she stops using quotation marks for portions of the last chapter, it works in a way that feels like your brain and heart got dipped in a vat of some golden, luxurious fluid. Every character has an immense depth, every combination of characters interacting with each other reveals even more depth to their stories, and the story itself is a powerful exposé on love, how it can be distorted, how it can be misused and abused, what we sacrifice when we allow love to veer into self-deprecation as we worship something else. I love Toni morrison she without a doubt has the best body of work of any author ever. S TIER MORRISON BABY
