This is not a bad book, and my rating reflects that. In fact, it's a rather good book and one I would recommend to many people. But it was a disappointing read, and it's hard to really explain why. I love Kingfisher's fairy tale like stories. Both Nettle & Bone and Thornhedge are favorites of mine. But this one was just missing a little of the whimsy that made those books so fun. It was just so heavy. The abuse Cordelia faces throughout the novel is really hard to read, and there isn't enough joy to quite balance it out. This could have worked if the book leaned more into the horror, but it didn't fully commit to that either. All around, a good book, but I just wish it had been better.
