Honestly did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I haven't read Victoria Aveyard in well over a decade and while I liked the Red Queen series, I wasn't sure she could pull off something more New Adult. I'm happy to be wrong.
Her writing style has translated really well into this story. It reads very cinematic which helped plot flow smoothly, skipping over downtime/travel, and also gave us insights into the characters and world.
The lore had me hooked from the get go! Allward as a whole realm built from old and ancient cultures that came from other realms that got spliced in via rifts in reality is really cool. It leads to a lot of different shifting dynamics between each kingdom that we do get to see play out. I want a lore book on Allward's past.
The characters are great, I enjoy reading every POV. Each one brings an important view point or characteristic to the story. I hesitate to compare to Six of Crows, but Aveyard has built a team of protags (and antags) that are nearly as well done as the Crows.
All around a very good read!
