Review:

I recently got back into Fantasy, and picked this up because a) it was all over Instagram, and b) I really liked the setting it is based in.

When I started reading it, I felt like I was entering its world. Tracy has an uncanny way of getting the reader immersed in this world of teens in pre college and super secret clubs that fight demons after dark. To be fair, as I read, I felt I was reading another shadowhunter book, but more diverse.

Bree and Alice, best friends since they were kids decide to attend pre-college together. However, post trauma, Bree has become someone Alice no longer recognizes. One of the things that completely brought me in was how Tracy shows grief. Bree’s internal fighting between who she was and who she is now is constantly driven by her feelings for her mother. Feelings she doesn’t like talking or addressing. I loved how connected Bree’s father was, and how he made sure Bree got the care and support she needed. Alice, who Bree hid most of her feelings from, understood as much as a 16year old could. But there were times when I felt like screaming at either to stop behaving like teenagers. Which is when I’d realise, hey they ARE teenagers. It’s you who isn’t. Anyway.... let’s move on.

Then all at once it was too much. Too much information regarding the world of the legends, Arthurian time and the Round Table, bloodlines, aether, The Order, scions and Vassals and what not. I got so confused so fast I kept going back and forth to make sure I didn’t miss any detail or a beat. Not saying that the world built was bad, just too fast. With information thrown at the speed of light. How Bree kept up is beyond me.

The fantasy is low and building, I really like how the elements blended into the real world. Nick, our golden boy, is sweet, soft and present. Everything you’d want our girl Bree to have. Sel, on the other hand, is the resident bad boy who gets on everyone’s nerves and throws death threats as if they were grapes. I have a feeling Bree will end up with Sel, as almost all YA books where there’s a good guy va bad guy trope. (I kinda wish she stays with Nick
