Dark, raw, emotional and angry. „Animal“ left me confused, somewhere between shock, rage and devastation.
Joan is a deeply troubled and unlikeable character - even if I empathized with her loneliness and rage. There are so many topics being touched: how society teaches women to distrust one another, abuse of power and male violence as well as traumatic experiences like rape, loss and miscarriage. Throughout the narrative it becomes clear how vicious and not alright Joan really is - and even though it is troubling to read, I loved how disturbing and nuanced her thought patterns were written - and how deeply convinced she was of having done nothing wrong.
