Seeing
by José Saramago
I wasn't sold on this book. As a follow up to Blindness I had extremely high expectations for it, but it took about 2/3 of a moderately entertaining and mostly boring political diatribe before I got to the story that I wanted to read. The last 1/3 of this book was up to the caliber of story-telling that Blindness had. At that point in the book, the familiar characters of Blindness begin to reappear and the climax of the story begins to build. Saramago is a brilliant author of human nature. And this book, like Blindness left me feeling as I do after reading a newspaper article on some recent atrocity that has struck. I'm shocked, awed, saddened, but ultimately contented to believe that... yah. that would happen. This is the world we live in, and it is echoed in the pages Saramago writes with bittersweet satirical prose. Another brilliant story by a brilliant author who will be greatly missed.
