Tina Makereti is New Zealand's Elif Shafak.

The Mires had just Shafak's sensitivity to the natural world, to relationships as the fundament of society, and to a storytelling that is at once gentle and powerful. And really well paced.

I think Makereti was unlucky not to win the Ockham last year - this was a really strong showing.
