The Winner's Crime by Marie Rutkoski
4.0

I used to think that only the first and last book in the series were the golden nuggets, but this book disproved that whole logic.
Let me just start by saying that this book is a crack of reality. Not in their crazy dystopian society, but in their emotions. There's so much pain and hurting but in the sense of not being able to get what you want. The fight against a better cause and one's own greed traces the entirety of this book and creates a dissonance that a reader can't really turn away from. Both characters grew as people and felt an immense tear that yanked them either towards their personal desires or the better cause. THAT longing and self-hatred reverberated into my emotions at times.
It's so easy when writing a book to let the characters get what they want in the end, or in some distinct way. Rutkoski teased us with that idea but then hit it with a train. She brilliantly maneuvered everything as if it was a bite and sting game that no one could control and now we're left to see the reminisces. I'm kinda stressed, but ready to see how this book closes out.
