McEwan really is one of the masters of contemporary realism. Writing in the wake of the Sept 11 attacks in the build up to the all out war on terror, McEwan successfully navigates a passage between global, transnational terrorism and personal terror. Narrating a single day in the life of the protagonist, McEwan carefully interweaves each element of the story, masterfully connecting them into the final confrontation and beyond. Though at times the strong reliance on neurosurgical terminology was numbing, in the end, the story is compelling, emotive, and engrossing.
