The writing is beautiful at times, although the story itself is lacking and seems more driven by inflicting the most amount of trauma/tragedy within the pages than by driving the story forward. There is no deep character development, although there is a good deal of development in the relationships between characters. Yes, this book is tragic, unbelievably so.
