Rainbow Rowell - Box Set: Fangirl & Carry On
by Rainbow Rowell
How do I describe Carry On? I'm going to say Harry Potter fanfic meets Twilight meets Citizen Kane... and yes that is just as cringe-worthy yet amazingly addictive as it sounds.
There were many things I didn't like about Carry On but well up on my list is the spells. I think I winced at every single one. Also, Simon Snow is a fucking muppet. Like... even when he develops and stops being quite so stupid, he's still wandering around like he has nothing going on in his head to the point where it's actually funny.
On the other hand, Penny, and Baz, and even Agatha are great. Rowell had me laughing at a lot of their dialogue and odd interactions, and I loved reading about the families they were a part of (like Penny's scholarly feminist parents and Baz's punk of an aunt). Also, all the romance is super adorable and super addictive. Although I kind of wish we got to know a little about Penny's boyfriendViktor Krum Micah... I'd like to know what kind of person she would be interested in.
I have two recommendations if you wish to read and enjoy this book:
1. You do not have to read Fangirl but I think it is important to understand the context of where Carry On came from so you're not left feeling like you picked up fan fiction of the fifth Harry Potter book and put it down before it gets interesting.
2. Go into it with a playful, light-hearted attitude! So much of this made me audibly groan, but in almost an endearing way. If you fight the awkwardness, you will hate it. Just go with it!
Alright, not sure how much else I can say here without spoiling it, so go forth and judge for yourself.
Edit: I almost forgot to quote my favourite line here!
'Just when you think you're having a scene without Simon, he drops in to remind you that everyone else is a supporting character in his catastrophe.'
Because that basically sums up every fantasy protagonist ever.
