This was a slow burn. The pace picked up about the last 1/3 of the book, but you have to get through the character building in the first half. The book was written beautifully and I love how the stories weave together in the end. The characters are loveable. The reality of racism throughout the book is difficult to read about how ingrained it is into US history/government and how many humans suffered. The book feels like a call to action against racism (which is necessary and cool that the author accomplished that).
It's an extremely sad and harrowing ending that will stick with me.
