The Clan of the Cave Bear
by Jean M. Auel
I finished reading The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel this afternoon. This is the first in a series of stories about Ayla. As a five-year-old girl, she is left orphaned by an earthquake. Ayla wanders alone for awhile and after escaping an attack by a lion, she is rescued by a clan of Neanderthals. She on the other hand is a more modern Cro-Magnon. She breaks lots of rules, understands and figures out concepts that the clan hasn't even figured out, becomes a mother and the medicine woman of the clan, and at the end is cast out. She is forced to leave her son behind with the tribe because they consider her dead when they cast her out. It was a very interesting story and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
