This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

4.5⭐️ I could not put this book down. I was so invested in these characters and their plight. First of all, I am always a sucker for children who overcome adversity. Jane Eyre is an all time favorite. So this had me at plucky white orphan in solitary confinement of an Indian school. Boy does some of this hurt the heart though.

But I love the relationship and camaraderie of the four main characters. The historical period of the Great Depression and the depiction of Hoovertowns and the treatment of Indian children in boarding schools was well researched and excellent. I loved the spiritual element that wove its way through the story. Music also played such a pivotal role and I loved how it touched and healed and soothed and comforted. Storytelling was also instrumental and used effectively. There was so much to love about this book.

My only issues are #1 The title and #2 the ending. After being so invested for so long, the ending just seemed hurried to me. It just seemed rushed and not in the same flow of the rest of the story. As for the title, I know that it was explained a bit in the book but it just doesn’t seem to fit for me. Hardly reasons not to read this book though. I think it will end up in my top 10 this year.
