Suite Scarlett
by Maureen Johnson
Scarlett Martin's family owns and lives in a small hotel in New York City called the Hopewell. Everyone in the Martin family helps out around the hotel. When the children reach the age of fifteen, they take over the care of a suite. Now that she has turned fifteen, Scarlett has taken over the care of the Empire Suite. The Hopewell has seen better days, so the Martins are thrilled when a guest decides to stay the entire summer. A glamorous and eccentric has-been actress named Amy Amberson chooses to stay in the Empire Suite, and she expects Scarlett to attend to her every need at all times.Meanwhile, Scarlett's older brother Spencer is trying to kick-start his acting career, and he needs her help, but Scarlett can't help but be distracted by her crush on Spencer's co-star.
I loved the unique setting of an old, family-run hotel in NYC, and I enjoyed reading the details about the hotel's history which were sprinkled throughout the narrative. The characters were interesting, and their relationships felt real. I had a little trouble connecting to Scarlett because the book was written in third person (using "she" instead of "I"), so we're not getting the story through Scarlett's eyes and we can't get into her head and read her thoughts. The plot had plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep me interested though. The story is equal parts humorous and heartwarming. I will definitely be checking out some more Maureen Johnson books in the future!
