Deep Blue by Jennifer Donnelly

2.0

I was lured in by the cover and the very thought of mermaids. While I generally like young adult fiction, I found that this was perhaps closer to "middle-school" and not in a good way. Within a few chapters a young female protagonist has suddenly inherited a throne, lost the throne, and now is on an epic quest to save all of the ocean. There are clearly girl rivalries and of course there is likely going to be some unbelievable quest that only a mermaid princess will be able to achieve. Within a few chapters there are tons of mentions of different ocean populations, sub-par world building, several puns, and a lot of The Little Mermaid feeling archetypes.

After giving this a few chapters, I just found the writing to be mediocre and thought there were just too many 'been there, done that' moments. Lots of puns that, honestly, annoyed me (I did not find them as clever as I guess I was supposed to). As the story begin to drag on, I went ahead and decided this was going to be a DNF book.

Perhaps this would be better if given to the correct audience: middle school girls.
