What Lies Between Us
by John Marrs
4.5
Following duel perspectives and alternating time lines, we follow Maggie a Sixty Eight year old women living out her days in her house confined to one room and chained most of the time and Nina; a younger women who is Maggies keeper. What do these two women have in common? They are mother and daughter. This is were the two time lines comes in. We get some present day with Maggie being held prisoner and Nina being her captor but then we jump back Twenty – Five years later. We get the story of how they get too were they are now in the present. I love this aspect of the story. The slow build up and revealing of answers to the questions you ask yourself all the way throughout the narrative.
These characters are twisted, both of them are unreliable although Nina is definitely the crazier of the two. The lies, secrets and drama of this story is so addicting! The characters are so well developed, at time I felt bad for them, I was shocked by them. Nina is unpredictable having experienced extremely emotional childhood this causes a downfall of dominos warping her mind and actions. Maggie is a mother above all else her actions have been to protect her daughter. She has done things many people wouldn’t. There a lot of emotions and insights that come from her character you want her to be free.
Overall great read if you want an shaky narrative, with so many twisted turns this is an addictive and fast read.
