This book is a powerful and emotional story of redemption that made me feel more emotions than I expected.

Lux Colombia-Clarke’s character arc between Ace of Betrayal and Queen of Vengeance is amazing. In book one, she was the sharp-tongued mean girl who seemed to care only about revenge and her social status. Those traits are still in this book, but we see beneath her hard exterior. She’s fierce and driven, but also loyal and loving.

This book covers some tough topics,  like grief, abandonment and abuse. But Jessica Jude handles each topic with sensitivity and grace. The pain is realistic, but it doesn’t define the characters.

Now for Slate Lawson. Slate grew up in a low income area, and following the loss of both parents, has been left to raise his little sister, Briar, who has an unknown medical condition. He will do anything to protect her, to get her a diagnosis and give her a good life, even if that means making questionable decisions of his own.

Slate is an incredible MMC. He has many flaws, but he sees Lux in a way that nobody has tried to before. He doesn’t want to change her, he just wants to show her what love can truly feel like. Their relationship grows slowly, with reservations on each side. They both need each other for answers, but find themselves drawn to each other in the meantime.

Lux makes Slate want to be more. And in turn, he teaches her that love doesn’t have to hurt.

This book explores the power of finding love in unexpected places, and that social divides can’t compete with the bond of two people who want to fight for each other.
