A Gathering of Shadows
by V.E. Schwab
3.5 stars.
I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. I didn’t think it was terrible but I didn’t love it. I thought the first book was boring but this one gets a whole lot more boring. Most of the book is just Lila and Kell aimlessly wandering around. It was a lot of filler that could’ve been cut out and replaced with something more interesting. The end was the high of the book though. I’m intrigued to find out what happens in the final book.
I find that Kell is extremely boring. Very one-dimensional; he cares about few people and he will go to any length to protect those few people. He’s also strong? I don’t know, he’s just boring. Lila isn’t bad (I definitely like her more than Kell). I know people do not like the “I’m not like other girls” stuff but it didn’t bother me that much (not to say it didn’t, it still did, but I’m not furious about it). Alucard was interesting I suppose. Wouldn’t have minded more from him. I think that Rhy was one of the strongest characters, which is sad since he doesn’t get the most focus. Holland, too. Seems interesting and I’d like to learn more about the why’s and how’s with him.
I think the fight scenes were improved upon and were more climatic than in the first book. The writing is still just okay overall. Good world building still, but overall kind of a lame read. I enjoyed reading it, however I didn’t like it much.
