This book took me completely by surprise. I was expecting a fun YA fantasy with dragons. Instead I got a politically complex story of two children coming to age just as some problematic political structures are also coming of age. .
I can tell it’s the first in the series. The mmc and fmc went through a lot of growth, but this book was setting up way more character development. I loved that the secondary characters had depth, and had their own stories too.
The world building was spectacular. Like the teens who are slowly seeing the problems with their world, the reader is slowly, SLOWLY fed little bits of information that make your more and more uncomfortable. And by the end I was a little emotionally lost - in a good way. What can be trusted? How do we even define “good” anymore?
I cried by the end - I was drawn into the characters’ trauma. I couldn't put it down for the last 20% or so. Will be picking up the next book tomorrow morning asap. (Might need a happy comfort read to get to sleep now though.) In the best way I’m left shaken and mindful about the story I just finished.
Definitely recommend.
