In the Field of Grace
by Tessa Afshar
3.5 stars! I’ve always wanted to read a fictionalized version of the book of Ruth—I’ve always thought this Bible story is just brimming with subtext that cultural differences stood in the way of understanding fully.
I don’t read much (any?) Christian fiction (as the art of a novel—which I adore—can be somewhat overtaken by preachiness), but this is a story I’ve always wanted more of. Like, that threshing floor scene fleshed out... wowza.
It was worth the time investment to enter this world for a spell. I wanted to try and feel the culture of the day and how Ruth herself may have felt, and this take on her story accomplished that.
