And Another Thing... by Eoin Colfer
1.0
slow-paced
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No

I wanted to like this book, having been fond of this series for nigh on a decade. And I was hopeful for Eoin Colfer. Not because I was a fan of his work (haven’t really ready any of his other stuff) but because it’s an uphill battle taking on a sequel for a beloved series written by a deceased author. Sadly, I did not like it.

I had the rare chuckle here and there, but this book lacked that classic H2G2 of the original trilogy (the last two admittedly also varied wildly from what I loved about the series). It largely focused on characters outside the core quad, except for Zaphod to some extent. But it was just too much Thor, too much Nano ruler, and too much weird Vogon son. Way too much Thor if you ask me, and I usually like lore about the god of thunder.

I also did not like some of the Guide interjections. Whereas in previous books I loved rhe descriptions of the Babel fish and how it disproved the existence of God, here they felt forced in and the “additional readings” sections did not land.

And while the humor rather than the plot is what typically drove these books, I didn't love how everything shaped out.
Trillian was unlikable, Zaphod was pretty constant so that was fine, Ford kind of just did his own thing offscreen, and Arthur is just left alone again?
An unsatisfying end that lacked the gut-chortling humor I loved as a kid.
