Free trade gave rise to monopoly, and monopoly gave rise to colonisation of foreign lands, export of finance capital, dual loan-trade profits for the colonising states, and, finally, once the world had been entirely divided amongst the great powers (start of 20th century), imperialism between states to redivide monopoly ownership of those colonised areas.
