Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King
5.0
The ka-tet, in this installment, follows the path of the beam to Calla Bryn Sturgis, where the Wolves come once in a generation and take one half of every set of twins. Bound of honor, Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and even the love of my life Oy, are bound to help regardless of the folken’s fearful misgivings. They meet many people in Calla Bryn Sturgis including Pere Callahan, a Catholic priest brought to Calla Bryn Sturgis from New York and the King book Salem’s Lot via Black Thirteen, the most dangerous part of the Wizard’s Rainbow. They also meet Rosalita Munoz, Pere’s housekeeper, who brings solace to Roland’s aching bones and heart. They meet Benny Slightman the elder and younger, the only twin who’s other half died before the wolves could come, which leads his father to betray the Calla and help Andy the robot and the Wolves invade the Calla. Meanwhile, Susannah’s pregnancy and new personality created to mother it, Mia, are furthering the undercover pregnancy of something horrible and demonic, conceived when they brought Jake through to Mid World. In the end, they defeat the Wolves with only the loss of Margaret Eisenhart, the wife of a big farmer, and Benny Slightman Jr, Jake’s only true friend. Susannah slips away in the aftermath to have Mia’s baby, going through the Unfound door and taking Black Thirteen with her.
I really enjoyed this book! I abandoned it in the middle for a while, but overall I enjoyed the people of the Calla, particularly the Sisters of Oriza. The twist, that Andy and Ben Slightman were the traitors, was not telegraphed early, and the conclusion was satisfying. Onto the next!
