The Third Twin by Ken Follett

3.0

This book was written in 1996 and so is a bit dated now. However it's still a good, fast paced read. Billed as a 'techno-thriller' it has elements of a crime novel without being a police procedural. Genetic researcher Jeanie Ferrami has a personal reason for discovering whether criminals are made or born: her father is a thief who has been in and out of jail her whole life. She has developed a way to search data bases to find identical twins. For her studies, she wants to study identical twins who have been raised apart. When her friend and colleague Lisa is raped on campus Jeanie is supporting her and trying to help the police. Jeanie meets a handsome younger man, Steve, through her research. He has come up as a twin not raised with his sibling. Lisa identifies Steve as her rapist but Jeanie is sure it's not him. When they find Steve's brother who is in jail they really don't know what is going on. There are a trio of powerful men who are quietly making things happen behind the scenes. And it turns out that one of these men, Jeanie's boss, has a son called Harvey, who is also identical to Steve and the brother in jail. Jeanie, Steve and Lisa work together to uncover a massive secret.
