It's Not Like It's a Secret by Misa Sugiura

this was a very cute story. i want to say it's lighthearted but it delves pretty deep into how different environments can shape racism as well as how it can vary from one person to another. the family dynamic was interesting--it's definitely not something i expected, but i can see how it makes sense and it's a little bittersweet. sana went through a lot of growth--from trying to fit in with the white crowd in the midwest to finding her group and girl in the pacific west which opened up the prejudices she didn't think she had growing up as the rare POC in wisconsin and then trying to change that POV through even more messes.

her friends were pretty realistic, i think. i grew up in a pretty strict household and, honestly, sana's home dynamics was pretty lenient for me. i think i related more to hanh in how strict my parents were--of course, i didn't jump through hoops to do things like that. (i did however lie very much about the presence of boys being somewhere.)

the romance between jamie and sana was cute. not my favorite and not that strong, but it was still nice. it was a sweet thing she did at the end, but it also doesn't justify why she had to do it.

basically this story was v complex and, as per usual, i am incapable of telling my opinion in a coherent and organized manner. anyways, the cover is really cute!!!!!!!
