i was really engaged at first, i liked the dark academia vibes, the setting, the developing relationship between carmilla and laura, and even the toxic student/teacher situationship carmilla and de lafontaine har going on (and it was depicted very well, in all its creepiness and uncomfort). however, the side plot of de lafontaine and iside took the focus away from laura and carmilla way too much in my opinion, and i didn't understand what this book was trying to do. moreover, the decision to set the events in the 70s didn't bring anything to the plot and honestly any decade would have worked. the other characters introduced remain in the background and this gives some monotony to the plot.
