Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
3.0
Every time she says something like "What. The. Hell." or "For the win!" I want to cut my eyes right out of my skull, but overall this is a fast-paced, readable, sexy book with fun magic.
Don't get me wrong, the worldbuilding is a little tragic. What medieval fantasy world has indoor plumbing and wristwatches but not pens? How is Violet's birthday in July unless their world has a Julius Caesar? There's a lot of lazy writing, the expository dialogue and overabundance of swearing is cringey, and Xaden embodies every romance novel bad boy trope plus a few Yarros seems to have stolen directly from Sarah J. Maas.
What was I saying? Oh, right, it's still pretty hot. Not when she tells you how hot it is, but the other times. Don't expect to be surprised by any part of the plot (she will telegraph every twist in advance), but the dragon signets are cool, the incorporation of disability is nice, and the sex is legitimately erotic. Not much else you can ask for from a book like this.
