Grass for His Pillow by Lian Hearn

I liked the book, but I found it frustrating at times. Often the main character makes decisions that are obviously going to end in disaster, and although I appreciate that recklessness is part of the main character's nature, it's annoying that aspects of the plot rely on him making poor decisions. I still really like the main female character. Although I like the idea of a setting inspired by feudal japan, I still find it a bit odd here because nothing in the story really relies on things specific to feudal japan; the story could just as easily be set anywhere else, so I'm not really sure why the author went out of their way to research an era that they have only really used as set-dressing. Of course, it's interesting to have a fantasy story set somewhere other that faux-medieval Europe, I just meant that it's a shame to see the setting and era not really put to much use.
