As a first-generation immigrant woman coming from a more "traditional" culture, I could relate to Yara's struggles on a deep level. There's this level of expectation put on women's shoulders about how they should act, yet no one ever questions the men. This injustice and deep-rooted sexism has followed me all my life, so to have it represented and presented so well in a beautiful novel felt great.

While I personally cannot relate to look-based biases, Rum did an exceptional job of describing the experiences of a Palestinian woman. I was angry for Yara. Angry at her coworkers, her boss, her family, even her therapist...

The book did get very repetitive for me toward the second half and transformed into something other than what it started. BUT I loved the characters and I think this is an incredibly important one.

Support Palestinian's freedom. Much love and respect to Etaf Rum.
