This is truly one of the best novellas I have read! It tends to be hard for me to get into a novella because I generally feel the plot and development of the characters is rushed, and they are often predictable. While the ending was expected, Promise of Refuge was so different otherwise! The plot felt like it was timed perfectly, and I loved the characters and couldn't wait to meet them again in Preacher on the Run! I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the book. Jayna did a wonderful job filling the book with history, and, yet, making it feel like actual, everyday life for the characters in the book, rather than feeling like she was explaining to the reader what was going on at that time. A truly wonderful read in a setting that is rarely written about! Jayna may be my new favorite author! I love how clean her books are, and how much she delves into history, skillfully slipping it into the story.
