The Summer I Turned Pretty Complete Series
by Jenny Han
I really and truly loved this series. I found myself relating to Belly in certain ways, like with the complicated but loving relationship she has with her mother and the odd relationship she has with her best friend. Even though I found the ending incredibly predictable, I still found myself sitting on the end of my seat, hoping and wishing that everything would end up the way I wanted it to. I was sort of in a pickle though..I fell in love with both of the Fisher brothers, and I felt myself to be in a constant battle with who I wanted Belly to be with. The writing was incredibly beautiful in the sense that I really felt the character coming through when reading in their point of view, or reading back to a certain age or time in the past. I love all the secondary characters as well, I find that they play an important part in the book and I believe everyone should be able to read the book and find someone who connects with them.
I do plan on re-reading this series in the future. It was a delight to read and I highly recommend it.
~ SPOILER ~
The only problem I really had with this book was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed (the whole wedding, Conrad sharing his feelings really late and then Jeremiah running off, the letters, breaking up, more letters, marrying the other brother, ect). I really wanted to find out more about what was in the letters Savannah sent to the boys, and I wanted more of Belly and Conrad together. I also didn't like how Jeremiah ended up. Yes, I knew that Conrad was forever. It was always going to be Conrad, and don't get me wrong, I do love Conrad, but I just - my heart really ached for Jeremiah. He loved Belly the way she loved Conrad, and to see it all break underneath him; to think that he has to spend his life seeing his brother with her and thinking of what could have been, really hurts me. I wish there was someone on the side for Jeremiah throughout the whole book (not just his date to their wedding) so that I didn't feel so guilty for being happy for Conrad and Belly. I just love them all - ARGH. I'm also not going to go into Susannah. I knew that her death was coming and my heart still sank to the pits of my stomach. I honestly just want more and more of this series. I want more of Cousins, I want more of the Fishers and the Colkins. I will definitely be reading more of Jenny Han's works.
